Publication - Textiles - the Five Character

Is my dress a text? Is my text a dress?

And Five askes herself....:
Is fashion a code? -
A code is still not fashion!

Five has soo many questions:
Can an image be a publication?
Can a painting be a publication?
Can a garment be a publication?

Can a text on a “strange” surface be a publication?
Should something been printed to be considered a publication?
Is publicity a publication?

Then Five realized:
The moment the texture of a dress is observed as a text, the garment disappears.

Publication – making public. It is an “act” – although a book is called a publication, it is an object.
Publication: presenting new – knowledge – stories – poems – imagery.

Five is fresh air, a bright future, a more dimensional hybrid female, an energetic morning start, a cold sunny day in spring.

Five is e-textiles.

Inner drama:

At a certain moment Five forked. She split in two.
One part became material. One part became text.
The text became printed on garments.

This became Publication Textiles

Outer drama:

collapse of the utopia of the youth of Five.
How did it get from dreams about space travel to designing a ventilator dress to keep cool in a deteriorating polluted dystopian environment?
Of course this is also waves, winter and summer, cloud and sunshine, sleep and wake up, dream and cut your finger when peeling a potatoe...

Five told us: This Evoluon looks very much like the future, but it is really "old"! In our civilisation the future is in the past. We are old at the age of 20, then we gradually grow younger.

Five reveals: being born in our civilisation is not like the donut or pocket birth on Earth, we are borne in a Klein Bottle configuration. This means we can take a look at what will happen in our life and decide not to be born. We would never choose a life where there will happen wars. We refuse discrimination. We hate power. Since these lives can be filtered out by the Klein Bottle Birth, wars just don't exist.

Five: we think it is normal to consider many levels before taking a decision. In every decision at least the individual and the collective are included. Children learn this at Kindergarten even earlier than learning to speak. Sometimes it takes a year to decide to drink a glass of water. But why hurry?

Five said: in the Klein Bottle Birth we can overview life and see death. This means we enjoy the totality of being and not being. Of course not all details can be seen and many freedom is left.

In my world there is a friendly competition in making the best decisions on all levels. We are in awe of beings which can involve the most detailed levels of consideration, some very wise beings involve insects, plants, the clouds, weather systems, ocean currents, and so on in their decisions, Five remarked.

Day minus 4: from far away.

Pattern: the void.

According to Five everybody has to start somewhere, since there is something and not nothing. Galaxies, deep space, gravity lensing, infrared imaging...
Five starts small. There is much hope. There is only optimism. There are no limitations to dreams.

Day minus 3: touch down.

Pattern: observation.

Astronomers wrote about the descent of Five on Earth like this: There was an indication of a light.
Then two, three, more.
Out of light came space. Large space generated small space.
Tetrahedral space travel. Triangulations. Bringing space through space.

Pattern: Doubt?

Designers like mysterious things, the unclear, the not working.
Ancient texts, charts, tesselations, incomprehensible scribbles.
What is obscure is always more interesting, more suggestive than clear cut instructions about how to become happy.

Day minus 1: rejoice

Pattern: dancing in the street.

What is primitive and still underdeveloped is also more fascinating than the polished and finished.
Expectations are more energetic than results.
Beings strive on illusions, not on facts and what has happened.
Although nobody agrees on what has happened, Five thinks this remains asymmetric.

Day 0: expectations

Pattern: hands and feet.

Limbs like hands form, the earth is like a womb, books too.
What is not starting as a game?
Five is extremely interested in the hand, the shape of the Earth, the nature of text.

Annihilation of the Future of Five


Five lives with expectations.
You can call this her dreams and fantasies.
But this is the future Five is looking for.
Also the future forms some kind of a goal, to work towards.

  But then this future Five has imagined is not realising.
The future is determined by World events and global opinions.
Suddenly the World seemed to decide the future is not very bright.
The Future of the World will be war, pollution, rising sea levels, flooding.
Everybody is publishing only about this terrible future.
Everybody is believing in this Future.
Nobody questions the fact that 50 years ago the Future was totally different.
Nobody views back even further, where the future was also imagined otherwise.
Five is at a loss.
Where is her bright future?
It feels bad to lose a bright future. Five is kind of stuck. If the future is so dim, why live on?

  Five goes on a journey to search for her future.
Somebody tells her that the current idea of Time is that in its simplest form it is some kind of a line, from the past, to the present to the future.
Five thinks that the past is really simple. The past then is formed by what has happened. This seems a fact.
But a friend tells Five that, the feeling of past is not the facts but the interpretations of these facts. From different standpoints the past looks different.
Different groups of people have different interpretations, totally opposite ore even excluding each other’s interpretations.
The interpretations are so different that Five does not even understand the other groups.
Five often sees that many interpretations are taken over without many reflections.
Since the future is not even based on what has happened, the future must be even less comprehensible.
So Five starts to doubt the current pessimistic vision of the future.
At the same time Five starts to doubt her own idea of the bright future.

  Where did this bright future idea come from? Strange enough the only time this idea of a bright future can be formed is…in the past of Five.
This makes the world even more strange. The idea of the future is formed in the past, and the idea of the past is formed in the present.
The past thus changes. Terrible facts are forgotten, or very positive things are overshadowed.
  If the image of the bright future is formed in the past, and if this was an interpretation, it must have been resulted in a reverse process.
My bright future idea, thinks Five must have been formed in the wake of a terrible past.
If something is bad, anything coming after this must be experienced as very good.
And indeed there were “bad” things happening before the times of the forming of the bright future idea of Five.
But wait a moment! Why should a future just be bright in itself.
That would not be fun.
Don’t you want to fight for a better future? In order to be able to fight, a future should not be bright.
The future is there for you to “make”. Only by improving on the present a bright future can be evolving.

Work a making the future bright! But Five keeps muttering….

Day 1: materialization.

Pattern: the body.

Five develops these ideas, but also undevelopes. Ideas can be seen as clouds. Changing appearing and disappearing. Clouds seem to have a shape but that is just illusion. Shape is illusion, illusion is the clouds shape.

Day 2: Five in touch with galaxies.

Pattern: the connection.

Happy future style.
Small bleeps on deep wavery sounds.
Small waves of the water, superpositions.
Discovered a lot of other civilizations in the Universe.
Civilizations like waves of clouds of gas of ideas.
Very light stuff.
Playfulness.
Early morning – early evening feelings of expectation.
Study of Vorfreude und NachSpaß.
Free walking.

The Past of the Future

Five is formed by ideas about the future in the past.

Five feels the future in e-textiles. This is a future of spaceships, meeting alien civilisations.

Day 3: Five in the Solar System.

Pattern: the Sun.

Five thinks that:
The secret joy of paying attention to unimportant objects.
Unimportant, despised, discarded.
Then not bringing it under attention, not emancipating it.
Look at it in the shadow.
Don’t tell anybody.

Day 4: Five and energy harvesting

Pattern: transformation.

Actually Five runs on tiny bits of energy. Just the energy needed for sending data around. No matter is moved or heated.

Day 5: Five develops an Exobag

Pattern: Recycling.

The first e-textile swatch exchange swatch.
Five knows from experience that
To be able to live on planets some recyclable materials are needed, programmable devices, some sensors, all very minimal.

The body snatchers.


Five was travelling from Linz, the mayor e-textile center of Europe to Eindhoven. Travelling is a big risk. One of the mayor city hubs in between is well known, even famous, for its dubious environments and everybody is warned that they steal even your underwear where you are walking in right now. But apparently one moment of inattention was enough.
Dear Five, how could you be so in thought. This hyper smart transport switch point is not Japan, where you can put your wallet on a crowded crossing and find it back after a week with all the money still inside! Five was all tears. They had stolen not her underwear. It was even more disastrous. The total shape of Five, everything visible was gone. The only thing left were data, feelings, emotions, text, and thoughts. What to do? It must be done quickly, otherwise the thoughts are dispersed. The datasets could lose their structure. The text slowly but surely will lose first some letters, then words, then whole sentences will disappear.
Friends tried to confort Five by telling her data that this still was the best of two evils, losing your visible shape is to be preferred above your content. A visible shape without content is like an aluminum body shape visible from the inside. A reward was promised if somebody returned the shape of Five, but this didn’t help. Five had to find another shape. She tried out several shapes which were on offer. But this was still impossible without a visible starting point. To alleviate the first appearance a garter bar knitting was arranged. This meters long flexible knitting proved the first step of regaining part of a visible shape. Then Five went to a shop of avatars. Trying out different skins could even be called fun.
 More than fun. In fact, running around in different skins and outfits was a great feeling. Finally, the prison of the given body and the cultural chains attached to this one and only body were gone. This totally stupid idea of a fixed gender and being proud of this and having to boast on being a man or a woman is belonging to the past. The skin can be made more smart using sensors. Imagine every patch of your skin connected to the internet. It can be updated all the time.
In the end Five was very happy. Hell was turned into well-being. An algorithmic shape as code is like a text. The travelling of a text is far easier than travelling with a body. The text can be cut up, encrypted, send by mail over the internet and restored at the destination. Touching surfaces which are not cleaned, being too close to other bodies, having to listen to boring conversations, like sweating – it all belongs to the past.

Day 6: Five uses Alien Detectors

Pattern: touch.

Five needs sensors. The brain in the box needs to sense the outer space.
Start with light and temperature, humidity, heart beat maybe.

What we really need to measure is empathy.
Also emotional granulation.

Day 7: Five outside her Aluminum Bodyshell.

Pattern: the body.

Five is curious about the body.
The outside of the body is well known nowadays.
Even the inside - as a machine - the functions, the circulation.
But the inside of the body shape as an independent surface which can not only be admired but also has it proper inclusive rights, is a new concept.

Day 8: Five explores the Sensor Skins

Pattern: the skin.

Five added sensors to her skin.
Compared to the few sensors attached to a microcontroller the skin with its millions of sensory possibilities is of an other order.
Philosophers now declare the skin as the basis of all intelligence. Sociologists declare the communities of micro-organisms on the skin as the modelling for future human societies.

Day 9: Five develops alien fringes

Pattern: the edge.

Five lives on the edge.
We should celebrate the borders.
Technology and soft decorations form a difficult pairing needing lot's of therapeutic sessions.
Decorating technology is forbidden by designer laws.

Day 10: Five mirrors the future

Pattern: reflexion.

Five mirrors in mirrors, in windows.
Being by being a mirror of being.
Mirroring is translated in empathy.
It gets complicated for thinking when mirroring mirrors. Although being seems to be only mirroring mirrors.
Like a systems of numbers which are defined by taking nothing and wrapping this up times and times again.

The body snatchers.


It started as a dream. Five was under a big tree. The branches were spread out wide. The leaves were large, and it was dark under the tree. Black birds started flying over the tree, their wings casting a large shadow, it grew even darker. Then clouds started gathering. Big dark angry clouds, like you only see in your dreams. These black dream clouds formed rings and they grew very threatening. Slowly every bit of light was blocked.
It felt like these Japanese monogatari, where the heat is compensated by telling ghost stories. In these stories too, lights go out one by one, making it darker and darker and you cool by becoming afraid. In the end, under the tree, under the birds, under the clouds everything was pitch black darkness. Five found herself in the dark. Not only darkness, but it really grew also more and more cold.
Sounds started coming from the dark. A river, and from the sluggish sounds of the waves, all in the dark, voices were just audible. Complaining voices. Five was really scared and promised never to complain about anything ever again. In the darkness everything Five touched seemed filthy. Five promised to clean all things every time, always. In the pitch black darkness Five stumbled over tables, chairs, pots, carton boxes…Five promised to maintain a strict order for all the boxes and drawers always forever…
Then a first patch on the dress of Five started lighting up. The spine warming dress started glowing. The sensors in the dress detected the objects that surrounded Five. Then not only the dress lighted up, but gradually the whole body of Five started glowing. The internal glow chased the darkness away. First the clouds disappeared as clouds do after a storm in your dreams. Then the birds flew over, they disappeared in the distance in always changing patterns. The leaves were tilted by a gentle wind and allowed the light from the outside come in again under the tree.
Indeed the tree was also lifting its branches and opened up again. The darkness was gone long before Five woke up. The dream was chased away. Five vaguely remembered making all kinds of promises. She was told in her youth never to give a promise that you cannot keep. As all dreams after half an hour Fives memory of it was completely wiped out.

Pattern: interfaces.

Five is always between specific spaces.
Where do we manage interlacing spaces?
The world of interfaces is more than a switch board.
What if the interaction becomes the interface itself.

Day 12: Five knits and felts sur-face and inter-faces

Pattern: the knot.

Five was fond of space more than a surface. The surface is the skin of space.
In knitting surface grows into space.
Knotting a line around an imaginary concept of a surface.

Day 13: Five, trying out life, before it starts.

Pattern: identity.

Before materializing, Five contemplated shape and possibilities.
Everything is tested and tried out in advance, except for being the life human.
You have to discover it while living.
This is absurdistic and waisting resources.
Nowadays we test and see if products might be some sort of a possible succes.

Day 14: How Five sees space - like a knitting

Pattern: structure.

Space is ... an illusion to be constructed.
The construction of space is started from a line, a thread.
Even a surface is an illusion, constructed by knotting a thread, making a denser cloud like surface.
The holes in the surface create a space.
Illusions make the space and the surface hard like a rock. Five told herself.

Day 15: Five beamed to Earth using a knitting machine

Pattern: materialisation.

Having chosen an optimistic form Five is finally landed on Earth.
Bumping on land or in the sea in a small sized space capsule is of course considered primitive. Five can use anything to arrive.
Here a knitting machine is the vehicle of materializing from Space.

Day 16: Five develops Mars Fashion

Pattern: loop.

Five thinks around all the time.
On Mars everything organic will be used in many more ways than on Earth.
A dress will also be a dinner.
Then it will be fish.
Then it will be green energy generators.
Then it will be harvest.
Then it will be designed into a dress again.

Day 17: Five is part of transparent reality –

Pattern: double images.

And Five thought that there is very little work done in this promising field of transparency.
Light is transparent to itself. Light can travel for the total time of the universe and be captured by telescopes unchanged.
In fact this means that light is very boring.
But thanks to this boring fact the birth of the universe can be observed.
Five askes herself if thoughts are transparent.

Day 19: Five in a solar system of light.

Day 20: soft interfaces

Pattern: Fabric.

Waiting for a reply. Not having an answer.
This alien told Five of the culture of creating an expectation and reveling inside the waiting for an answer period.
This can only be done if the boring solution will always come one time.
It is putting food on a table and not eating it – just waiting to start.

Five always fights decorations and at the same time loves the minimalism.

Day 23: Five explores paper as material.

Pattern: Paper.

Five works mainly with textiles.
Can paper be considered a textile? Paper, like a textile is a surface. On the surface, the boundary worlds mingle. Interesting things happen.
Only on the surface there is significant meaning. Only on the surface there is change.

Day 24: Five studies Space Surface deformations

Pattern: interference.

When regulare patterns are overlaying, shapes of another order appear.
Small dynamics have large effects.
Five experimented with simple geometries which produced complicated orders.
Combinations of simple orders cannot be overseen anymore.

Day 25: Five and social Wind

Pattern: wind.

Five is cooling air.
Dress of wind, smells of cut grass,

Unstorying


Five always wanted to publish. Publishing is modern. Everybody who is interesting and leading a wonderful life is working on publications. Five investigated the notion of publication, making public. Books are so wonderful. Filled with knowledge and wisdom. Besides that, a book is a mysterious object. The only disadvantage of a book is its popularity. There are so many books! And these books are so wonderfully designed! Therefore, Five started doing research on how to publish without adding even more books to the world of books. Five looked around and saw everybody wearing garments. On these garments sometimes there is printed a word or some unreadable text. Nobody is really using the surface of a skirt or dress or trousers to publish her text. Five started printing text on garments. This generated a lot of critical remarks. The text cannot be read because your arm is in front of it.  Some words are cut of because of the shape of the dress. Five thought that if this is generating so much critical remarks, it must be really good! And she happily continued publishing text on garments. But then came a very annoying critical voice. Five was a bit put off by these arguments.
A critic remarks: 

A text is to be read as a story.

A story cannot be overseen like an image.

The characteristic of a story is that it is hidden before the reading point and opened up, behind.

This goes for academic texts as well as for literary texts. 
And the critical voice continues: 

Putting a text on garments is making an image of the text.

It is un-story-ing the text.

What is left is a text-ure. 

It cannot be seen as a text anymore - so it is not a publication.


   Five had to think about this. Texturing a text was not her purpose. And by observing Five also thought that either she could read the text, but then could not see the garment, or she was looking at the shape and way the garment was worn and could not see the text.
But then  Five replies:

That is why we need interactivity.

This means there is stil a local experience point from which the future is hidden.
This interactivity will be added on small screens.
The screens show hidden layers of the text and draws in your attention.
The story on the text is hiding its meaning.



Five thinking all this asked herself: Will this convince the critical inner voice?
Five continued: Did it ever occur to people that books have only one side? Normally the book cover is considered the outside. But on this cover, there is not the content. One cannot consider the inside of the book, the many pages, with this cover. A dress can carry text on the outside and the inside.

Day 26: Five adds words.

A text is visual but not called an image.
A text on a dress is perceived as texture.
Text is the code. Positioning words next to each other generates meaning.
The moment the texture of a dress is observed as a text, the garment disappears.
Apparently, the concepts of text and dress are mutually exclusive, apparently not transparent.

Day 27: Five puts text on geometrical shapes.

Pattern: structured text.

Five went from the surface to a shape. But what happens to the readable text?
geometric shapes, forming cubes or more.
From surface to cube.
The text is leading - the geometric shapes adapts, like a paper.
No damage to the meaning.

Day 28: Five cuts Shapes of Fabric with Text

Pattern: pattern.

The surface is not flat anymore, it can be wrinkled, bent, covered.
The text is not lineair anymore. The confirmation of being a publication is given up.
Non geometric shapes, flat but referring to the body.
Not the text is leading, but the shape.
Is it still a readable text? Is again and again the big question of Five.
